The gateway to Banks Peninsula, Little River is about 45 minutes' drive from Christchurch, 30 minutes from Akaroa, along State Highway 75. If you’re coming from Christchurch you'll find The Little River Hotel is about a minute before the township.
The population of Little River has never been huge, but once upon a time a few thousand people lived out this way, working in timber milling and farming.
Little River had a blacksmith shop, engineering company, boarding houses, general store, hospital, hall, tea rooms, jail...and of course, the Hotel.
In the old Waiting Room at the historic railway station building you’ll find the Little River Information Station where you can find out more about local tourist attractions and the history of our area. There are also locally handmade crafts for sale.
